We also reconstructed extravasation of tumor and inflammatory cells, and circulation inside spheroids including endothelial cells and human lung fibroblasts. Her music has been widely performed in the U.K. We also observed an increase in cell proliferation around the synthetic vasculature induced by flow, indicating functional perfusion of the culture medium. Using this culture system, we perfused the lumen of the self-organized capillary network and observed a flow-induced vascular remodeling process, cell shape changes, and collective cell migration. The method employed the self-organization of endothelial cells to generate a capillary network and a static pressure difference for culture medium circulation, which can be easily introduced to standard biological laboratories and enables long-term cultivation of vascular structures. Here, we developed a simple and reliable method to implement a perfusable capillary network in vitro.
As a part of SCO Connect Fellowship funded by BBC Performing Arts Fund.A lack of microcirculation has been one of the most significant obstacles for three-dimensional culture systems of organoids and embryonic tissues. Worked with primary school children from the Orkeny Isalnds (Papay, Eday, North Ronaldsay, North Walls, Rousay, Shapinsay and Burray Primary Schools), music animateur Stephen Deazley and SCO Connect Musicians. As a part of SCO Connect Fellowship funded by BBC Performing Arts Fund. Worked with primary school children in Edinburgh for composing and performing works inspired by pictures at Scottish National Portrait Gallery, together with music animateur Greg Sinclair, SCO Connect Musicians, and Artists based in Edinburgh.
Recently she’s turned her attention to the goings-on of the natural. The result is intense a music of the hospital ward. As a part of SCO Connect Fellowship funded by BBC Performing Arts Fund. Bodily functions are to Shiori Usui what sonata form was to Haydn. The workshops was led by composer and music animateur John Barber, SCO Connect and Scottish folk musicians. Involved in the composition and song writing projects with the school children at Scottish Borders to commemorate the 500 years anniversary of the Battle of Flodden. Visceral and corporeal, Usui has composed work based on. Usui’s compositions are often inspired by human anatomy, its physical gestures and involuntary reflexes, and by other living creatures and ecologies. We toured 4 additional support needs schools in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, giving 8 school workshops, 4 school performances, and 2 public performances in Woodend Barn Banchory, all in one week! Here is a lovely short clip of our show (thank you Symon Macintyre!)įantastic working with the school children with additional support needs at Saltersgate School, in Dalkeith, culminating in the performance of Gauche the Cellist with music and shadow puppetry performed by the students of Saltersgate School, Vision Mechanics and the musicians from SCO. Shiori Usui (born 1981) composes works which incorporate elements from an expansive range of sources, from Bulgarian folk music to Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis, an insect-pathogenic fungus.
